Journal Switzerland - Day 8 Mürren - Sunday, September 17, 2006

Rain in Mürren

We were pretty tired from the previous week's adventures not to mention last night's dash so we slept late. It was raining outside but we found a silver lining in that cloud - it was snowing on mountain tops. The TV in the room had "tourist" channel showing live shots from the scenic spots around the area and mountain tops were being covered by fresh coat of snow.
Eventually we ventured outside for brunch. Traditional Swiss dish of fried grated potato called Rösti was just perfect.
After brunch we spend some time planning our week in the mountains and then Richard hit the sauna while Victoria went on a stroll around the village. It was so quiet and peaceful.

The mountain tops were shrouded in clouds but that only made the waterfalls stand out.

Mürren is perched on a high hillside, directly above the Lauterbrunnen valley. Our ascent via cable car last night was quite spectacular even though it was a bit cloudy. Mürren is the highest year-round inhabited village in the Berner Oberland (Bernese Highlands). It has been inhabited for over 700 years, is car-free and has a population of about 400 (not including the tourists, of course, but apparently rain kept most of them away). We were so lucky to be able to stay in Mürren and enjoy its alpine charm and pure mountain air.

We were told that the grocery store was closed on Sunday but during the afternoon walk we spotted the bakery that was open. In addition to bread and croissants, they had small selection of groceries. Our hotel room had dishes, coffee maker and tea kettle so we were set.
